What to ask Practitioners in Digital Media?

Task 1 for Friday 11 September 2009

What Questions Should You Be Asking?

The questions you ask will depend on what you want to find out. So,
·         first, it’s important to be clear about what you do want to find out
·         then start to think about how to ask the right questions
For example:
If you ask someone, ‘Do you like your job?’
They could simply answer, ‘Yes.’
But if you ask them, ‘Why do you like your job?’ they have to give you more information.
Try to start your questions with one of these six words:
·         Who
·         What
·         Why
·         Where
·         When
·         How
By using any of these to start your question, you won’t get a ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ answer but you should get the information you’re really after.
Don’t ask like this   X
Ask like this
Did someone encourage you to be a web programmer?
Who encouraged you to be a web programmer?
If you didn’t work in digital media, would you go and work somewhere else?
What would you like to do if you didn’t work in digital media?
Do you like your job?
Why do you like your job?
Are there any courses for editors?
Where can I go to learn about being an editor?
Did you get your first job after leaving college?
When did you get your first job in the digital media industry?
Do you have to keep up with technology in your job?
How do you manage to keep up with technology in your job?
Use the sheet on the next page to help you decide what questions you want to ask and how best to ask them?
This is what I want to know
This is the question I’ll ask
