Richard Jobson: Film Producer: Lecture - Alhambra Theatre, Dunfermline

DMC students visited one of a series of workshops 'Celebrating Fife' in the Alhambra Theatre in Dunfermline. Richard showed some of the footage from films he has produced. The students enjoyed and felt inspired by his lecture and clips.

A few of the students took up his offer to edit his films to provide the backdrop for his Saturday night Skids Concert in the Alhambra, Dunfermline (6 March 2010). This was a very daring project with a very minamalistic timeline of 2 days - 9 am Thursday - 5 pm Friday and being shown to a full house audience. Students met the deadline and are keen to see their work live. This was a fantastic opportunity and was grabbed with both hands by the DMC students.

Visit of Mhairi McNeill: Former Producer with BBC Scotland

Mhairi visited Media Space and gave an inspirational talk to DMC and HND students. Mhairi was a Producer with the BBC for 18 years and was made redundant along with 7000 others. Mhairi is now working freelance. She gave a resume of her education (very much still on-going) and her rise to position of Producer on such documentaries as those of:

Mhairi had a wealth of experience to pass on to the students - so much so that she has volunteered to return in the not too distant future to talk more intricately on the subject of film production.

Rae and Harry presented their team project of a video and Poster advertising the new Sims product

The video had a very good twist within and music fitted the twist. The poster was very Sims like

The client was Maxis published by Electronic Arts. Images were supplied by Electronic Arts and if project won music will be licensed for it.

The video was very well done and the poster appropriate. Harry and Rae made a very professional presentation of the work. The material all worked well on the electronic smartboard. The sound was quite dynamic.

The audience enjoyed the presentation and were complimentary of the products.

All other groups will present on Wednesday of next week

The evidence for Outcome 2 will consist of a folio containing ten items of digital media content across three different types of digital media content drawn from audio, video, graphics, photographs, animations, text. For each item the candidate will evaluate whether it meets the requirements of the project and will identify two possible sources.

The evidence for Outcome 3 will consist of a plan devised by you. The plan must be based on the given project. The plan will include details of:

Final Feedback and Overall Winner

Overall presentations were excellent. Not the easiest thing in the world to give presentations in front of class peers and members of staff. Questions from NewDisc members were not easy but those answering performed particularly well at this point and were professional.

Class wished to be given the opportunity to do a pitch again in order to improve performance. Students who did not participate in presentation may wish to do so at next opportunity.

Overall 3 out of 4 groups had the same score but as there could only be one winner - the team who just had the edge for creativity was Ultra Pulp Digital. D& S had a very comprehensive report on the many free social networking sites available for promotion and marketing of the company together with examples of how they had already been used with other bands. Meh Digitals had researched well and produced concept media to support their presentation. Also the presentation appeared to have been rehearsed well with comprehensive support notes.

Old Greig worked well as a team to present but had weak start and preparation was on the light side. Questions from the floor were answered well. Good examples were given and justified. Team were late starters in their preparation and could have been up their as winner with a little more preparation.

Ultra Pulp had well thought out ideas, preparation and presentation. Dual presentation added interest to the delivery of the presentation. PowerPoint was good and well structured. Creativity was evident especially in the Bluetooth push delivery aspect for marketing.

Overall teams worked fairly well but some teams contained members who felt left out or were not proactive in pushing forward their participation in the team.

Friday Presentations to NEWDISC

The Digital Teams pitched their ideas for marketing and developing the company NewDisc. Student Presenters did a fantastic job. NewDisc will decide over the weekend who will WIN THE CONTRACT but have intimated that all 4 presentations had great ideas and the presenters were some of the best that they had seen this academic year.

The creative process works best when there is collaboration between the team and the client. The relationship between the team and the client is crucial to a successful Outcome. The first stage is to understand the requirements of the brief. Good communication is an essential part of the process. As potential practitioners in a highly commercial and creative team operating in the digital media industry, candidates should be responsive to new processes, technologies and information that will benefit their clients.

Candidates should be encouraged to be experimental and imaginative in the development of their ideas. They will be expected to show an awareness of industry developments.

The response to the brief should show awareness of media, target audience, deadlines, budgets and other influencing elements.

Candidates will contribute to a presentation (or pitch) to a ‘client’ or ‘clients’. This could be an actual client, or teachers/lecturers or members of the candidates’ peer group could act as clients. Candidates will have an opportunity to use various visual techniques and creative samples to demonstrate their ability to convince the audience of the validity and appropriateness of their proposals in solving the client’s problem creatively.

Employability Skills

In this Unit candidates will generate evidence for the following employability skills:

♦ working co-operatively with others
♦ planning and preparation
♦ being innovative and, sometimes, challenging
♦ taking advice and dealing with feedback

What Questions Should You Be Asking?

The questions you ask will depend on what you want to find out. So,

· first, it’s important to be clear about what you do want to find out

· then start to think about how to ask the right questions

For example:

If you ask someone, ‘Do you like your job?’

They could simply answer, ‘Yes.’

But if you ask them, ‘Why do you like your job?’ they have to give you more information.

Try to start your questions with one of these six words:

By using any of these to start your question, you won’t get a ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ answer but you should get the information you’re really after.

Overview - Web Design and Development

The internet is one of the most important communications tools in the current marketplace. Websites are a key method of communication for almost every organisation, especially as around 20% of the UK population - about five million people - are now connected to broadband - a figure that is rapidly increasing. These websites provide a wide variety of services including some or all of the following:

News and information
Advertising and marketing campaigns
e-commerce
Online learning
Entertainment
Community activities

There are also many sites which provide links and information about other websites (e.g. search engines and portals).

Web designers and developers are responsible for creating, designing and often publishing content onto these websites as well as ensuring that the interactive elements of the site are presented in a user friendly way. The sector is characterised by the crossover between technical and creative roles - often with editorial, design, technology and publishing all combined.

The workforce in this sector is often highly educated - according to the Skillset Census the the web design sector employs 15,200 people, 86% of whom hold a higher education qualification.

Overview - Interactive Television

Interactive television allows viewers to interact with their television, playing quiz shows, choosing which sports games they want to watch and with the future possibility of choosing alternate endings to films and television programmes.

But entertainment is not the only option, for example, imagine a children's television programme that not only teaches them basic maths, but that allows for interactive testing, thereby revolutionising both television and learning. This is one of the reasons the Government would like to convert everyone to digital TV to allow this kind of interaction, and in the process, sell off the analogue bandwidth (now delayed until 2010 at the earliest). Although becoming more popular now, interactive television has not taken off in the way predicted by some commentators around the time of the dot-com bubble. Shows such as Big Brother and Pop Idol have successfully used interactivity to increase revenue.

Digitisation is what allows this interactivity, allowing more information to transmitted via broadband, cable or satellite. Digital TV has already had an impact on British television, with enhanced digital pictures and effects in nearly every other historical documentary. Digitally enhanced television has allowed for more fantastic visual effects, clearer sound and picture, and a seemingly realistic experience from the comfort of your own home.

Who works in Interactive Media?

The interactive media sector is estimated to employ around 40,000 people, representing approximately ten percent of the total audio visual workforce.
It is heavily reliant on freelancers and contractors, who are estimated to account for around one fifth of the workforce.
The workforce is generally very highly qualified. Thirty percent hold a postgraduate qualification and a further fifty percent hold an undergraduate degree. Hence in total, around eighty percent of the workforce are graduates.
The titling of job roles vary significantly within the sector. This depends on company size and the need to employ a number of new skill sets across projects on a case by case basis.
